I have been wanting to take a Pilates or Yoga class since Scotty was born. I would love to have someone else kick my butt (and tummy) into shape. But with 3 kids and a husband who, you know, is a youth pastor…there doesn’t seem to be a good time to go to a class. Well, through our cute little community there is a pilates/yoga class offered early Saturday mornings. I quickly signed myself up. Its a perfect time, I can be home just as the kids are having breakfast and we can all play together for a little bit before Jeff has to go to work.? Last Saturday was my first class. As I pull up to the building I notice it is the neighborhood senior center. Hmmm okay, I guess the class must not be very big. I enter into a room of round little white haired ladies! I have signed myself up for a senior citizen pilates/yoga class! Awesome. I am the youngest by 30 years easily. Not only that but our instructor was a bit of a surprise as well,? 65+, and as round as a snowman. I have to tell you, I was very doubtful that Ethel was going to help me get my body into any kind of shape. I had some prejudice ideas that the exercise instructor should be in good to better shape than his or her participants. Well, one hour and fifteen minutes later Ethel had out posed me, out stretched me, done the pilates 100, bowed to the dog on the high moon, and left me in her 65 year old dust, as well as some of the other white hairs. Needless to say, my attitude was quickly adjusted, I was very sore the next day and I’m going back for more!

Don’t let those little white hairs fool ya!

  1. So true Amanda! I walk in the nice weather, but during winter go to the local adult center, because it only costs $25 a year! Many of those women are atleast 20-30 years older than I am but I am amazed at their strength! Yoga is challenging! Keep up the good work!

  2. Hilarious! I have been wanting to sign up for the water areobics class at the community pool. When I saw that everyone in the class was easily over 60, I changed my mind. Sounds like I should reconsider. The windchill here makes it unsafe to walk several months out of the year. There is no way that we can afford the workout center that the people our age go to. Happy pilates to you! And by the way, I am quite impressed that you would get up so very early on a Saturday morning.

  3. My 36-year-old friend attends the water aerobics class simply because she is the youngest there. She says that not only is it a good workout, she leaves the class with a little ego boost. Plus, all the older ladies in her class are really nice and dote on her. And, Amanda, 65-year-old-dust or not, congrats on committing to the exercise. I love to work out – it creates that mental space we all need sometimes in this business of ministry.

  4. haha. thanks for sharing your pilates experience. I took my first pilates class about a week ago with a friend and I have to agree that it totally kicked my butt! I never realized how hard you could work-out with out even breaking a sweat. Needless to say I am 26 and have no children so I have no excuses for being out of shape! Oh well. Hope you keep up with the Pilates. I will pay off in the long run for sure!

  5. I’m not quite 30 years younger than all the ladies in my yoga class, but close! Being that it’s the closest and cheapest class, I attend and my little girls get to go along with Resident Pastor to Monday and Thursday night church meetings. I love it, love it, love it, love it. I think it’s so funny that you are actually in senior class…hahaha.
