Be careful asking my advice…I just might give it to you, straight up.

Amanda on May 15th, 2008

I’m always surprised when other moms want my advice about (anything) but most recently, preschool. They seem to ask as if I know something…?

For instance, if I’m going to send my kids to our church’s preschool and if I am it must have been a God given premonition and other schools are from Satan, right?

When really the only reason I am sending my son there is we get a discount and Jeff can take him and pick him up from school each day.

Don’t get me wrong I LOVE our church. I am excited for the education Dylan will get from people I trust. But we do pass 4 other very qualified preschools on our way to church, that are in fact much cheaper.

So I tell it like it is, and usually they walk away not liking my answer. I don’t think it’s godly enough for them.

Just something I have observed.
Do people expect you to know stuff just because of your husband’s job?
Have you ever felt like people want you to be more “Godly” than need be for some situations?

It was so great to read all the ways you all encourage your spouses. I know I took some notes from you ladies! I love the way each of you loves and supports your spouse.  We do a lot of kidding around and venting on this site, which I LOVE! But it is refreshing to read how much you love being married to your youth pastor. I was really encouraged by your encouragement.

I had some youth pastors from Simply Youth Ministry read the comments and they (all men) voted on their favorites. (side note, if it had to do with sex…you probably won!) Here they are, I know you all are holding your breath…

#1 Shari

I pray for him. I love him to the best of my ability. I feed him. I make love to him. I listen a lot. I truly believe that he is an incredible man of God and that he is loving kids to the best of his ability and by God’s help even more and I tell him that (although probably not enough). I laugh with him. I cry with him. I care.
Married to a youth pastor for 14 years this May!

#2 Diana
To encourage my husband we have sex and I initiate it…he would say that’s the #1 encourager for him.

#3 Ryanne
My husband is actually the spouse of the youth worker…which means he probably needs even more encouragement! As you can imagine my husband’s time and “our” time is sacrificed a lot due to busy schedules, late night small groups, and events. I try so hard to make sure that I know the things that make my husband happy, like football, and look for reasons and different ways for him to enjoy what he loves. That could be sitting next to him while he watches the game or making sure he sees atleast one game live a season.

Congratulations ladies!

I love all your ideas, you guys are great!!

Love,

Amanda

I Can Make a Great First Impression!

Amanda on May 8th, 2008

So, I’m in Target with my kids, Molly is screaming in the cart because she wants to get out and run away. Dylan SO badly wants a Star Wars toy that he is breaking down in the middle of the underwear/bra section. I am praying for some divine intervention. But I do need to do a little bit of discipline here. So I am trying to give my son a time out inside the basket part of the cart next to his screaming sister, and trying to reason with my 2 year old daughter. My voice was a little louder than it normally is, I’m sure I was a sight to see. It was awesome! And a lady approaches me and asks, “Are you Pastor Maguire’s wife?”.

Crap. This is a perfect time for a first meeting from someone from the church. I said, “Yes.” And then she just said, “It’s nice to put a face with a name.” And she walked away. What? Oh great, that’s just the “face” I want her remember. I wanted to run after her and say, “I’m really a great mom, I’m so nice, I tell my kids i love them ALL the time, and I clean up real good I promise!” But I didn’t. Oh well, what can you do?

I HEART Mondays!

Amanda on May 5th, 2008

I’ve got to tell you how much I love Mondays! And today is no exception, I slept in until 9am. I cooked breakfast for my family, my HUSBAND got the kids ready and we all went to Disneyland for a few hours. The kids fell asleep on the way home, we snuck them into bed, and had 2 hours to ourselves! Tonight we will have dinner at a little Mexican restaurant down the street, my HUSBAND will give the kids a bath, we will watch Mr. Rogers together and then the kids will go to sleep…AND THEN…I will get to watch The Bachelor (I love The Bachelor, don’t hate). What a day, I love Mondays! This is the wonderful perk of having a YP spouse, he has to work all weekend, but I feel like we really make the most of having a weekday as a day off. No one is around any of the places we go, and most friends and family have to work, so we don’t share our time on this day very often. It truly is a sacred day in our home.

I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m bragging. I’m just really excited and hope, hope, hope each one of you has a sacred day with your family. Sometimes I think it’s what keeps me alive.

What do some of your day offs (“sacred days”) look like? What are some of your favorite ways to spend time with your family, husband and all?

My WIFE is a Youth Pastor

Amanda on May 2nd, 2008

Recently I have been receiving comments about where the guys should go if their wife is in ministry. Well, I never intended for this site to be just for women, but I think guys desire a different kind of forum to discuss their needs and issues. A great guy, John Snyder, just started a blog for the men. If you’re a guy, I’m not kicking you out by any means! You just might want to read it from another man’s perspective, something I cannot give you.
If you are the YP and a woman, pass it along to your husband.
Enjoy!

This About Sums it UP…

Amanda on April 28th, 2008

Today I asked my 4 year old, “What’s the name of our church?”

He replied, “Daddy’s Work.”

Yep. Pretty much…
