Well I guess I had a few ah-ha moments.
#1 I have to tell my husband what I need instead of expecting him to know he has enough on his mind and is not a mind reader.
#2 Is that if we are to make the long haul and stay together we have to have time for us that we keep.
#3 The church nor my husband are God and God can not be replaced with eather
#4 Most of all its okay I don't have kids. I am not just a YPW I am a minister too and can take some ownership myself.
It was all relly great I enjoyed it all.

Amanda I was thinking it could be helpful to post a link to the Conference media store so people can download the married to a youth pastor track if they missed it. You can't out a price on wisdom but $24 ain't bad!

i missed the whole conference becuz i brought my 3yo & 4 mo old.....and our hotel was too far away, naps, feedings....yada, yada, yada.,...BUT i did hear from my friend about some of the stuff you all shared and my heart feels so relieved that i am not alone in trying to balance things and also the whole concept of my kids being my "small group" and because of their schedules, i am really not a huge part of yg right now and that it is ok....whew..that was really refreshing to hear! i have committed to

1)not feeling guilty for being in this mommy bubble right now and

2)to savor and enjoy the mommy bubble knowing full well that it is temporary and there will be a day that i am so involved i'll wish i was back in the bubble....

hmmm...that's my main revelation for now...

One more conviction that reached me over the weekend is that I've been replacing my relationship with God with the ministry. I'm so busy serving and doing that I am sacrificing relating. Which means I am burnt-out, resentful, bitter, and not a supportive wife. I've replaced God with the church. It's hard for me to believe that God is good right now because the church situation is not good. And since my relationship with God is only serving and busywork in the church, I am not able to see God for who He really is. All I see is the fallen, human side of the church. So, one revelation I've had is that I have to work on my relationship with God, and realize it is separate than my relationship with the church. God help me!

It was great to meet you all, no joking this conference was one of the highlights of our year. I learned SO much, but my two biggest takeaways are:
1) Consider it a privilege to raise your children in the ministry. Take advantage of the perks like flexible schedules, having keys to the whole building, and unapologetically bring your kids to events even though volunteers don't.
2) Both my husband and I had a huge "Ah-ha" moment in the last general session when Doug was speaking on having an in the moment walk with God. He's a "quiet time" failure but finds strength and depth in relationship with God when he pauses for moments through out the day to connect and "Refuel."

Okay and just one more . . . .

3) Often saying yes to something extra in ministry, even if it's good, is really saying no to your family. My husband and I have a lot of balance, but we found so much relief in being given permission to say no. It was interesting to hear the same story over and over from veterans.

Amanda that hershey's confession is even funnier now that I've meet you in person.

Amanda, I was the crasher in the "married to a youth pastor" session as I am the youth pastor. I did, however, share the exact ah-ha moments as you. I especially shared #2 when Cathy said it is NEVER NEVER ok to sacrifice my family for the ministry. It was great to listen to you ladies talk about what works and what doesn't in ministry.

also, I share the love of hershey's syrup. I have been caught by my husband with my face in the fridge. My method of consumption is to have a swig of chocolate and a swig of milk then shake it up in my mouth (like a 5th graders!)

I made it too the Married to a Youth Pastor super session. Didn't get to see you, but Cathy was awesome. One of the main things that stuck out to me was that we need to let our kids know the expectations we have for them is because of our faith and morals, not because of who my husband is. Our first kid is on the way, coming in August, so I've been learning a lot of parenting stuff, especially going to the Partnering with Parents deeper learning track.

I greatly enjoyed many parts of the conference and had several ah-ha moments. I'll try to post a few as I can articulate them. My head is still spinning - it's a lot of information to process in such a short time.

One ah-ha that really blessed me was when we shared around the table of pastors' wives one thing that we love about youth ministry. Of the 7 women who had time to share, 6 of us said that the number one thing we love about youth ministry is seeing our husbands fulfilled in their work. It is so great to watch them LOVE what they do. We agreed that our husbands were at the conference, just bouncing like rubber balls, because they were so excited to be a part of it all. It was just nice to be reminded that there is a lot to love about youth ministry and that we are in this for the long-haul because our husbands are called by God to youth ministry. And, when they get to fulfill that call, they are so satisfied, it's awesome!
