We just finished Season 1 of The Right Stuff on Disney+, which is based on the Mercury Seven during the early days of the U.S. space program.
And, of course, in my head, I was singing "The Right Stuff" by New Kids on the Block.
As I child, I had a deep love for New Kids. I had their CDs, all five dolls, a lunchbox, sleeping bag, slippers, posters... you get the picture.
NKOTB was also my very first concert.
My mom took me to see them when I was in 4th grade and I could not have been more excited. Oddly enough, my strongest memory from the night is hearing that a woman was getting the logo for a local radio station (KIIS FM) tattooed on her butt in the arena parking lot in exchange for backstage passes. I have to imagine she's more than a little embarrassed to tell that story nowadays.
Josh's first concert was the Christian band Newsboys.
As we talked more about it, Josh dove down a rabbit hole talking about all the albums he had, the other artists that performed that night, the excitement surrounding the whole event...
I love the deep memories associated with a night at a live concert and look forward to the day when we-- and a big group of strangers--can sing along at the top of our lungs as a band plays our favorite song.
I'm curious... what was your first concert?
Peter Frampton December 1976. I was 14...My mom and dad took me and Gina (who was 12) to the Fabulous Forum to see him at the height of "Frampton Comes Alive." Oddly enough, as you say, my most vivid memory of the night was the woman behind us tapping my mom (yes my MOM) on the shoulder to ask her to pick up the joint she had dropped under my mom's chair! Ironically enough, the LAST concert I've been too (no thanks to you, Covid) was Peter Frampton at Pechanga in October 2019. I remember the NKOTB concert with you. SO exciting to see you so excited. (However, it must be noted that you DID attend the 1982 US festival--in utero--as well as an X concert a Joe Jackson concert and a Culture Club concert when you were about 18 months old. OH When teenagers have children...) I think my favorite concert with you was Elton John/Billy Joel about 10 years ago! You sang EVERY single line of EVERY single song. See? Teenagers CAN raise GREAT kids!!
